Dominick Cruz underwent surgery recently to repair his latest knee injury, and on Monday he said that all went well.
In an interview with Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour, Cruz discussed his timetable for recovery, and said he's expecting to be out nine months from this latest unfortunate setback.
"It went well," Cruz said of the surgery (transcribed by MMAMania.com). "I've obviously done this more times than I'd like. I've become pretty used to the sequence of events that take place. Right now, I'm in a machine that kind of bends my leg and I get to move it 10 degrees each day. I'm on 80 degrees today, 90 degrees tomorrow then I go see the doctor on Thursday and then rehab starts. I'm right on track, surgery was very successful and I am absolutely optimistic."
"I am looking at probably nine months. A typical ACL surgery is six to nine months, minimum. I'm just going to say nine months, because that's what the doctors say. That can be later or a little bit sooner. There is no way that it will be faster than six months."
Cruz returned from just shy of three years out in September, taking out Takeya Mizugaki in the first round in a fantastic moment at UFC 178. He was going to get a shot to regain his title against T.J. Dillashaw before suffering this latest injury in training.
Penick's Analysis: It would be great to see Cruz get back into the cage in 2015 and not lose even more time. These knee injuries have been brutal, and since this will keep him out another nine months it will mean four full years lost to these issues. It's massively unfortunate, because who knows what could have been for him had he been able to be healthy during that stretch. He may yet regain that title, but there's nothing that can bring back the time he's been kept away from the cage.
