The latest hurdle in Vitor Belfort fighting Chris Weidman at UFC 184 in February has been jumped, as Belfort passed his first random drug test ahead of the bout.
According to a report from ESPN.com, citing Nevada Athletic Commission Executive Director Bob Bennett, "Belfort tested negative for all banned substances" and "his blood serum testosterone levels were within normal range."
Belfort was randomly tested as a condition of his provisional license from the Nevada Commission, though the test wasn't conducted until a couple of months after that was granted, as well as after the fight was shifted to California's jurisdiction for UFC 184.
Also, while the tests were to be conducted at Belfort's expense, Bennett said the UFC offered to pick up the costs.
Belfort challenges Weidman for the UFC Middleweight Championship on Feb. 28 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Penick's Analysis: There still needs to be more testing done from now until February, because they have to put the effort in to catch him if he's using anything over the next three months. Weidman wants to see it happen, even as he's worried Belfort will get caught with something, but again, we need to see them follow through on more than just this occasion.
