In news that doesn't make all that much sense, Conor McGregor says he's going to be getting right back in the cage in November.
Against a lightweight.
The rising featherweight star, who arguably was in line for a shot at the winner of next month's Jose Aldo vs. Chad Mendes bout from UFC 179, revealed overnight that he's heading to Mexico City on Nov. 15 to fight Diego Sanchez at UFC 180.
I am fighting @DiegoSanchezUFC in Mexico, November 15th. He spoke a big game. Now he will pay with his career. VIVA LA EIRE!!!
Penick's Analysis: While this would open up the Frankie Edgar vs. Cub Swanson winner to get the deserved title fight next, it would be stupid to risk having McGregor derailed at a higher weight class against someone who consistently winds up with screwy decisions in his favor. Now, McGregor might be able to stop him, and he certainly believes that to be the case, but wouldn't be a reasonable risk to take when they could just as soon throw him in with Aldo/Mendes to see if he's their star Champion to build around. So while it appears McGregor wants it to happen, the UFC would be wise not to oblige him here, and that appears to be the route Dana White says they're taking.
