There's some trouble brewing for Saturday's UFC Fight Night 52 event in Japan, as main event fighter Mark Hunt is significantly overweight less than 24 hours out from the weigh-ins.
According to a report from Kevin Iole at Yahoo! Sports, Hunt started his camp at a ridiculous 340 lbs., and has only gotten down to 284 lbs., leaving 19 lbs. left to go to the 265 lb. heavyweight limit. He's allowed an extra pound allowance, but that still means 18 lbs. left to shed.
Should he miss the mark, and it seems quite clearly he will, Roy Nelson will be given the option to accept the fight, at which point he'd receive a portion of Hunt's purse, or decline it, leaving the UFC without a main event.
Penick's Analysis: Hunt even allowing himself to get to 340 lbs. in between fights is unacceptable and massively unprofessional, and it means he's not likely to be in full health come fight time. I can't imagine Nelson refusing the fight, even if Hunt is significantly over the mark, but it's certainly not an enviable spot to be in. This reflects extremely poorly on Hunt, especially after he just came to a new agreement with the UFC, and raised issues with it in the process.
