The next meeting for the Nevada Athletic Commission comes next Tuesday, Sept. 23, and during those proceedings they'll be addressing the press conference brawl between Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier.
According to a report from MMAJunkie.com, the NAC has filed separate complaints against both fighters for the incident at the UFC 178 press event in Las Vegas, which saw Cormier shove Jones, and Jones respond by taking him off the stage, followed by both swinging punches at one another.
The brawl brought a lot of added hype to the fight, which was supposed to headline next week's pay-per-view event, but an injury to Jones has delayed their fight until UFC 182 in January. However, both are still subject to disciplinary action by the commission, and it could be severe.
Per the report, the commission could seek fines up to $250,000 per fighter, as well as the purses the two were set to receive for the event. Any fines assessed will be decided at the hearing.
Penick's Analysis: They'd be overstepping their bounds to assess a fine that steep to either fighter, and if they dip into purses that weren't paid out it would be going even further over the line. Some type of fine is probably in order, because it's not something they can allow or encourage, but they can't go overboard, because at that point Jones and Cormier may not be all that keen on fighting in Vegas come January.
