If Georges St-Pierre decides to officially retire and never come back to the cage, his legacy is beyond secured. He'd be one of the few fighters to have gone out on top, and there'd be no denying his status as the greatest Welterweight Champion in the UFC's history.
However, UFC President Dana White has a hard time seeing St-Pierre simply walking away like that when he's still got a lot left as a competitor.
"It's always a huge debate on a guy who's had a career like GSP – to go out on top and walk away with the belt," White commented in the latest edition of The Download on UFC.com. "That's a personal decision that a fighter has to make. Being the competitor that GSP is, I can't see GSP doing it. But that's up to him."
Should he return, White doesn't see any question that it would be in a title bout, seeing as how he voluntarily gave the belt up to allow the division to continue on in his absence.
"It would be tough to deny that GSP comes right back and doesn't fight for the title, you know what I mean?" White said. "GSP can do whatever he wants. If he wants to come back and fight for the title, or if he wants a fight before that - he can do whatever he wants."
Penick's Analysis: St-Pierre's got to heal up from his knee injury, then decide if he wants to return to begin with, and then he'll need to see that the UFC is doing random drug testing on a more widespread basis. That's quite a bit that still needs to happen if he's going to come back in the next year or beyond. I would very much enjoy seeing him return if it's something he wants to do, but the longer he's out, the more unlikely that seems.
