Battleground MMA, a promotion bringing a one-night only tournament back to U.S. MMA on Oct. 3 in Okla., has put together another selling point for the pay-per-view event, as MMAFighting.com reports that they've tapped former WWE announcer Jim Ross and former three-time UFC Title challenger Chael Sonnen as the commentators for the broadcast.
The event is being sold on the back of an eight-man welterweight tournament, trying to capture the spirit of the olden days of MMA, and features several known names amongst the field.
The Oct. 3 tournament features six former UFC fighters in Dennis Hallman, Brock Larson, Cody McKenzie, Luigi Fiorivanti, Roan Carneiro, and David Mitchell, with Strikeforce vet Trey Houston and undefeated NCAA All-American Chris Honeycutt rounding things out.
Also on the card, UFC and Strikeforce vet Ryan Couture will take on Johnny Carson.
Penick's Analysis: Have to hand it to Battleground for this move. While Sonnen's serving a two year suspension and has been forced into retirement due to PED use, he's got his fanbase who will tune in to hear him on this broadcast. And I'm amongst those very much interested in hearing Ross on MMA commentary, so I'm quite intrigued to hear him on this broadcast. There's certainly a lot to be interested in with this event at this stage, and though the novelty could wear off quick, they're pulling off some solid moves to get people to tune in on Oct. 3.
