UFC Middleweight Champion Chris Weidman has his own fight to look ahead to this December, but on Wednesday's UFC Tonight program on Fox Sports 1, he commented on what's up next for potential future contender Luke Rockhold.
Rockhold was initially being targeted for a fight with Weidman's last challenger, Lyoto Machida, but after trash talking with Michael Bisping, the UFC is now looking at that fight. Weidman thinks that's the wrong fight for Rockhold, and doesn't think Bisping should be in that spot at this point.
"I think Lyoto Machida is a tougher fight than Michael Bisping," Weidman said. "Bisping is coming off a tough fight from Tim Kennedy, and he beat up Cung Le, who's been inactive. He doesn't deserve getting close to the title shot."
Penick's Analysis: It's hard to argue against Weidman here (and I won't). Bisping moving from a win over Le to a fight against Rockhold is a big step up the ladder, and gives him an opportunity he hasn't necessarily earned on merit. But that's prize fighting for you, as Bisping-Rockhold have done a lot of talking as of late, and if the UFC thinks that will sell more for them, that's the fight they're going to go with.
