Demian Maia has been forced out of Saturday's UFC Fight Night 49 event in Tulsa due to a staph infection, and according to a report from MMAFighting.com, he's at risk of some further complications.
His manager Eduardo Alonso says that the infection - which is currently affecting his shoulder - may be spreading towards the bone. Maia was hospitalized for the issue a second time on Tuesday, and an MRI showed "a big inflammation on the bone."
They haven't determined at this point whether that is simply a bone bruise, or infection, and doctors are attempting to figure out the extent of his issues.
Penick's Analysis: Wishing the best to Maia in his recovery. There can be serious complications from staph infections, and if it's not caught quick enough that could be a really bad situation for him. Hopefully they get the extent of things figured out so he can be treated effectively here as soon as possible.
