Gray Maynard suffered his third straight stoppage loss on Saturday night, getting rocked by Ross Pearson and finished in a flurry against the cage at UFC Fight Night 47.
It's been a precipitous downfall for the former title challenger, but while he's now suffered brutal losses to T.J. Grant, Nate Diaz, and Pearson in succession, Maynard could yet get another fight in the UFC.
Following the event, UFC President Dana White said he wasn't ready to push Maynard towards retirement as he has for some others, but it's at least a conversation he'll have with him.
"Obviously he came here to fight, and he's been cleared medically to fight, I think the kid is healthy," White said at the post-fight press conference (transcribed by MMAFighting.com. "But, you know, it's probably a discussion we might have. I'm not looking to chase Gray out of the game or anything like that. I'll talk to him though."
"These guys go through extensive medical testing and we know getting knocked out isn't good for you. But we'll see. He's a young guy, he's talented, we'll see what he wants to do."
Penick's Analysis: Maynard hasn't necessarily shown signs of serious damage, and honestly he looked better in the first round against Pearson than he did in either loss last year. That said, clearly his chin isn't what it once was, and it seems inevitable that if he keeps fighting, another knockout will happen. Whether it's in the next fight or not, if he keeps fighting, it's almost guaranteed to happen again in the future.
