Daniel Cormier was given a further platform on Wednesday on UFC Tonight on Fox Sports 1 to discuss the brawl with Jon Jones, and he felt it was a case of Jones attempting to intimidate him.
At the same time, while both have apologized for the incident, Cormier isn't sure he'd have done anything differently, and he'd have reacted the same as Jones as well.
"I figured he was trying to intimidate me. He put his head down on my head and nudged me forward and I pushed him off me," Cormier commented. "If a guy gets in your face, and makes contact, I respond. Was it the right thing to do? No. But if he did it again, I'd do the same exact thing. I believe it is mental warfare. If I allowed him to do that to me, he would have gotten a one-up on me, and I expected him to do the same thing to me."
As for the matchup on Sept. 27, Cormier is simply hoping Jones is his equal in that cage, as he's looking for a challenge he hasn't yet faced.
"I'm searching for a guy [who is] the equal of me in the Octagon," Cormier said. "I want that dogfight. Hopefully, Jon will be that guy."
Penick's Analysis: Cormier's looking for the biggest challenge of his career, and he's almost assuredly going to get that from Jones. Indeed, Jones is going to be the favorite coming in, and it might be surprising if Cormier is as much of a challenge for Jones as Alexander Gustafsson was. We'll find out next month.
