Rory MacDonald and Tarec Saffiedine will square off on Oct. 4, the UFC confirmed on Thursday.
The fight was previously reported as being in the works, and now it's officially set to headline the UFC Fight Night 54 event in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada that night.
MacDonald's trying to secure his shot at the UFC Welterweight Championship, and after scoring wins over Demian Maia and Tyron Woodley this year, adding one over Saffiedine could move him very close to that goal.
As for Saffiedine, the final Strikeforce Welterweight Champion hopes to score his second straight UFC win after a delayed debut in January. Injuries kept him out most of 2013, and he's been out again most of 2014 following a win over Hyun Gyu Lim.
The UFC Fight Night 54 event is one of two cards from the UFC on Oct. 4, following the event on UFC Fight Pass during the day from Sweden. This card will air live on Fox Sports 1.
Penick's Analysis: This is the right fight to make, and could serve as a sensible No. 1 contender fight. If MacDonald wins, a fight with the Hendricks-Lawler II winner could be sold. If Saffiedine wins, it will be six straight wins, he'll have beaten a top contender, and as the final Strikeforce Champ it will make sense to plug him into that title fight.
