Dennis Bermudez scored his seventh straight win in the UFC's featherweight division on Saturday night, submitting Clay Guida in the second round at UFC on Fox 12. The impressive win was just another in a string of entertaining performances, and Bermudez believes he deserves some respect and recognition.
"Realistically, I want the title shot," Bermudez said on Saturday at the post-fight press conference (via MMAJunkie.com). "I've got a lot of wins. I've been finishing guys. I'm an exciting fighter."
He's definitely garnering attention from the right places, as UFC President Dana White was among those very impressed with his performance on Saturday night.
"That kid just keeps looking nastier and nastier every time he fights," White said of him after the fight. "He gets better and better. His performance tonight against a guy like Clay Guida said it all."
"Clay is one of those tough, durable guys that no matter who he fights, he's in the fight. Tonight, Bermudez finished him. He looked unbelievable."
Penick's Analysis: Seven wins in a row is fantastic, and he's absolutely deserving of fights higher up in the division, but he's still got to beat some top guys to get into the title picture. Submitting Guida is a fantastic win in his favor, as that's just not something that has historically happened to Guida. But Guida's not very high up on the ladder these days, so it's not a win which can launch someone into a title fight. Bermudez should get a more challenging matchup next time out, and if he keeps winning fights that opportunity will come.
