With Nick Diaz signing a new contract extension with the UFC, he's gearing up to return early in 2015. The fight that continues to stand out as the top possibility is one with former UFC Middleweight Champ Anderson Silva.
It's a fight in which both have shown interest, and it's one the UFC would certainly like to put together, but it's not a guarantee for Diaz's next fight. As UFC President Dana White said on Thursday night, they've not even talked to Silva about that bout at this point.
With that said, Ariel Helwani at MMAFighting.com reports that one of Silva's managers, Jorge Guimaraes, says Diaz is Silva's top choice upon his return, which he would like to come on the UFC's Super Bowl weekend card in February.
If it all comes together, the layoffs of both fighters could come to an end on pay-per-view against one another early next year.
Penick's Analysis: I still believe this is the fight we see happen. I thought it made a lot of sense if they could lure Diaz back, and now that they have, one would have to imagine they'll push to make that fight happen. Now, if Diaz wanted to return earlier than Silva is willing to return, that could be an issue, but as he's already been out for 16 months now, an extra six to get to Super Bowl weekend shouldn't be much of an issue.
