It's been 16 months since Nick Diaz was last in the cage, but a long holdout is finally over, as the UFC revealed on Thursday that he's signed a new bout agreement and will return early in 2015.
While they say details on his next fight will be revealed soon, they seem to be hinting heavily at a fight with the returning Anderson Silva, including comments from Diaz regarding that potential fight.
"I'd like to fight for the title," Diaz said in a press release. "I think that would be a big deal and worth fighting for. I want fights that will lead to a title fight. Whoever is in line and whoever has the title, that's who I'm going to be fighting."
"I'd be interested in fighting [Anderson Silva] and anything that's going to do well," he continued. "As far as Anderson Silva, I think that would be a great fight for people to see because he has my type of style."
"I think he has a little bit more of a kickboxing style. I think people have pointed that out to him, especially the way he lost his last couple fights. He's working on that now, and he has a lot of work to catch up on as far as his punching. Usually with my style, people have a hard time. You have to come forward if you're kicking and stuff. You got guys that are moving in and out, but I work hard. I don't jump in and out. You can wind up all indecisive out there."
Penick's Analysis: It's almost got to be a fight between Diaz and Silva. They're both heavily interested in that fight, Silva is looking to return in non-title action, Diaz wants something that's going to sell. They've got that in this fight, and this is just great and exciting news for them to have come to terms for another fight.
UPDATE: While the Diaz-Silva fight was heavily hinted in that UFC.com release on his signing, Dana White says that's not necessarily in their plans.
There is no update on Anderson vs Diaz. Anderson can't fight till Feb. Lorenzo and I have not even talked to Anderson.
