Though it may not have been seen by many, Charles "Do Bronx" Oliveira pulled off perhaps his most impressive victory on Saturday, submitting Hatsu Hioki in the second round at UFC Fight Night 43.
The finish came after nine and a half minutes of fantastic grappling action, with both fighters putting on a ground clinic with their back and forth exchanges. There were numerous sweeps, submission attempts, scrambles, etc., and it made for a thrilling fight even before the finish.
However, it's the finish that elevated the bout to something special, as Oliveira grabbed on to a D'Arce choke in the final minute of the second round. Instead of rolling with it, or trying simply to trap a leg to tighten it, Oliveira pulled a high guard, with his leg up over Oliveira's arm to his shoulder, making it a hybrid D'Arce/Peruvian necktie, which should henceforth be known as the "Bronx Necktie," as an astute Twitter user suggested Saturday morning.
With the victory, Oliveira has now submitted four of six opponents at featherweights, with the other two 145 lb. fights ending in losses to top fighters Cub Swanson and Frankie Edgar. As for Hioki, this marks his first submission defeat ever, and drops him to 1-4 over his last five fights.
DON'T GO YET... WE SUGGEST THESE MMATORCH ARTICLES, TOO!
