After learning the extent of the damage to his knee in an MRI last week, Daniel Cormier has decided that surgery is ultimately his best option.
According to a report from Ariel Helwani on Wednesday's UFC Tonight program on Fox Sports 1, Cormier will undergo surgery in July to repair the lateral cruciate ligament (LCL) and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee.
Cormier completely tore the LCL, and found out that 50% of his ACL was missing in that knee. The injuries happened prior to his win over Dan Henderson last month at UFC 173.
His recovery will happen now through the rest of the year, and he'll likely return in a title fight against the winner of the Jon Jones-Alexander Gustafsson rematch on Sept. 27.
Penick's Analysis: Surgery seems to be the prudent move here. Had he tried to rehab without surgery, it may have been necessary to go under the knife eventually anyway. This way he gets that out of the way as quick as possible, and hopefully he's able to go early in 2015 to make that fight with either Jones or Gustafsson.
