"It's like Chael Sonnen. Chael's a nice guy. I've met him and hung out with him. I like him, and he's a nice guy. I can't stand the way he promotes fights. I understand what he's doing; he wasn't the most exciting fighter, so he made himself exciting by promoting the fight really well, and he got himself a couple of title shots for it. It works, but that whole crazy WWE-type stuff, that over-the-top stuff when you're fighting a guy, doesn't make sense to me, and I don't like it. But it is what it is. Some of the fans like it, and it gets people to watch fights, that's fine."
-UFC Hall of Famer Chuck Liddell talks to MMAJunkie.com about why he's not a fan of the way Chael Sonnen and fighters like him promote their fights.
Penick's Analysis: There are a number of different ways to promote a fight, and sometimes it takes "over-the-top" to get some people noticed. It worked for Sonnen, and though it had its share of backlash, he made his career even bigger and more meaningful than it had been before that, and that's something. That doesn't mean it's something that should be done frequently, and certainly it's not something everyone can do well. That said, the outside the cage talk to sell a fight doesn't mean anything without the inside the cage results and return, so on that end, Liddell's thoughts are likely shared by a large segment of the fanbase.
