Donald Cerrone's on a mission to fight six times in 2014, and he picked up another quick win on Saturday night to help him in that goal.
Cerrone submitted Edson Barboza at UFC on Fox 11 after knocking him down with a stiff jab midway through the round. Pouncing on the submission was a different instinct than many have in that spot, and Cerrone said after the event that he thinks that's the best moment to go for something like that.
"A lot of people try to end with strikes," Cerrone said on the Fox Sports 2 post-fight show. "I think that's the time to get the submission. It started off bad, but turned out OK."
Cerrone admitted he started slow, and "took about 30 unanswered punches to get going," but with the win behind him - his third straight - he's ready to get right back in the cage as soon as this weekend.
"Anyone who wants to fight and sign the dotted line," Cerrone said. "I'm ready to go in Baltimore or Albuquerque. Whoever wants to make money. I'm going for six. Are there any hungry fighters who think they don't get paid enough? Just sign on the line."
Penick's Analysis: Cerrone's mindset in the fight game right now isn't to be the best of the best, and that's fine. His mindset is to fight anyone, anywhere, at any time, to make as much money as possible while he's still got years in this sport. He's also putting on performances that people want to see, so at this point, the UFC should just give him what he wants to a reasonable degree and keep him as busy as possible, provided he's not taken tons of damage each time out.
