Fabricio Werdum will fight Cain Velasquez this fall in a fight for the UFC Heavyweight Championship, holding onto his spot on Saturday night with a win over Travis Browne.
Werdum is happy to get the fight he's been expecting for the last year now, and believes he's going to be a significant challenge for the Champ when they matchup later this year.
"I'm very happy for the fight against Cain," Werdum said on the post-show Saturday on Fox Sports 2. "It's been my dream for a long time. Not against him, but for the belt. I've been working for it a long time. I respect him, but I just showed one more time why I want the belt."
"Cain said he wanted to fight Travis Browne because he knows he could take him down and win the fight. But he knows when he takes me down, that's the start of the fight."
Penick's Analysis: This is what's interesting about the Werdum-Velasquez matchup. Cain is a fantastic wrestler, and his ground and pound is vicious, but if it hits the ground, Werdum is extremely dangerous with his submission game. That said, Velasquez's ability to keep things on the cage and do damage in the clinch is the real edge against Werdum here, so that's the part Werdum will have to contend with. His striking has improved greatly, but Velasquez is smart enough as the Champ to approach him in intelligent fashion.
