Gabriel Gonzaga lost a fight to Stipe Miocic this January at UFC on Fox 10, and he suffered a broken hand in the fight that's had him sidelined since. He revealed earlier this week that he'll be out for a significant amount of time, as he'll have to get another surgery on the hand this year.
"I had a complicated fracture," Gonzaga said in an interview with MMAFighting.com. "My bone was completely broke and I had to put a plate with four screws. I didn't lose any movements, but I have to go on surgery again to remove the plate and the screws or I can suffer another fracture."
"I'm training lightly. Waiting for my bone recovery to remove the plate."
Gonzaga understands he's been sent back down the line in the heavyweight field, but hopes to get back into action late this year and get back into the win column.
Penick's Analysis: Gonzaga's a solid fighter still, and though he's back down into the field after his loss to Miocic, he can probably keep himself on the UFC roster for a while once he gets back. A lengthy injury layoff is unfortunate, and a hand injury like this could be mentally detrimental to him as well, so that's something he'll have to be wary of once the hand does heal up.
