The heavyweight bout between Travis Browne and Fabricio Werdum on Saturday night at UFC on Fox 11 will determine the next challenger for the UFC Heavyweight Championship.
At the pre-fight press conference for the bout on Thursday in Orlando, Fla., UFC President Dana White said the winner will challenge Cain Velasquez this fall. Also, depending on when the Champ is ready to return, it's expected to happen in Mexico.
The UFC has been targeting a debut in Mexico City for some time, but because of Velasquez undergoing shoulder surgery after his UFC 166 win last October, they pushed back a tentative plan for this month. That will still be the location for his next title defense, though, should the timing work out.
Penick's Analysis: This has been the expectation for Velasquez's next Title defense, as they've wanted the Mexican-American Champ to headline that first card in Mexico. It hasn't worked out just yet, but it's still highly likely that the UFC heads south of the border this fall. If it's Werdum, they have another Spanish-speaking fighter to aid their media tours down there, but if it's Browne he'll make for a worthy challenger himself.
