By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief Light heavyweight fighter Reese Andy was cut from the roster almost immediately after his loss to Matt Hamill at UFC 92 according to a report at FiveOuncesOfPain.com. It was Andy's second straight loss in as many fights in the organization after losing to Brandon Vera in a rather lackluster unanimous decision fight at July's Fight Night 14 event.
He joins Rich Clementi, Luigi Fioravanti, Derek Downey, Christian Wellisch, and Eddie Sanchez on the list of recently released fighters. Cuts are still to come as the UFC attempts to trim their roster to around 150 fighters from their current near 200.
Penick's Analysis: This release was not surprising in the least, in fact I'm surprised it took this long for the word to get out. Despite an impressive record compiled outside of the Octagon, Andy never looked comfortable in his two fights. He was beaten by a very gassed and barely moving Brandon Vera and then absolutely handled by Matt Hamill, and as it seems to be a common theme two straight losses without any real redeeming action spells a fighter's doom in the UFC. He'll need to make some definite changes to his approach going forward, including a serious consideration in dropping to middleweight, as his frame really didn't seem to hold the 205 the greatest in the cage. If he can improve and fight his way back to the big stage, more power to him, but I don't know if he's shown anything to suggest he'll do that anytime soon.
