Georges St-Pierre left a lot of confusion about his fighting future after UFC 167 last month, saying that he needed to walk away for a little bit to deal with some personal issues that had been plaguing him. However, it appears he's set to clear up said confusion this week.
According to a report from the Journal de Montreal, St-Pierre has called for a press conference in Quebec City this Friday, where it is expected he'll reveal his intentions for his immediate future.
The UFC Welterweight Champion edged past Johny Hendricks by split decision in a fight most felt he lost at UFC 167. The decision hinged on a close first round that nevertheless seemed in the challenger's favor, but given the damage done by Hendricks in the two other rounds he won, there was a large outcry against the decision.
That was exacerbated by St-Pierre's post-fight comments, which drove UFC President Dana White to deliver one of his most heavily criticized tirades. He claimed that St-Pierre owed it to everyone to have a rematch with Hendricks, saying at one point he couldn't retire, though he later softened on that stance somewhat. Still, he hasn't backed down on the idea that St-Pierre owes him something, though we'll find out what the Champ has in mind come Friday.
Penick's Analysis: That St-Pierre is calling a press conference for this could mean any number of things. He could announce that he'll return and will fight Johny Hendricks sometime before the middle of next year. He could say he needs his time away, perhaps relinquishing the belt so the UFC doesn't need to worry about it. He could decide not to give any concrete answers and instead more adequately convey what he was trying to say while likely a little concussed after UFC 167. We'll find out one way or another on Friday.
