By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief Medical suspensions were handed down by the Nevada State Athletic Commission to five fighters coming out of UFC 94, including the Lightweight Champion B.J. Penn. MMAJunkie.com reported the suspensions as received from NSAC Executive Director Keith Kizer. For "precautionary reasons" Penn is suspended until March 18th with no contact allowed until March 3rd.
Others receiving medical suspensions were Thiago Silva, who has the same suspension as Penn for "precautionary reasons;" Stephan Bonnar, suspended until March 3rd with no contact until February 22nd due to a cut suffered on his scalp during his fight with Jon Jones; Akihiro Gono, same length of suspension as Bonnar due to "precautionary reasons;" and finally, Chris Wilson is suspended until July 31st due to a broken nose suffered at the hands of John Howard. Wilson can return early with a doctor's clearance, although he is required no contact until March 3rd at the least.
Penick's Analysis: A surprising number of suspensions, in a good way, when compared to some of the brutal events we've seen recently. I suppose that's one side effect of no submissions and only a couple of tkos.
