Conor McGregor made a big impression in his UFC debut last month in Sweden, taking out Marcus Brimage in quick fashion at UFC on Fuel 9. The 24-year-old Irish featherweight scored his ninth straight win with that stoppage, and immediately after the event UFC President Dana White knew where McGregor's next fight would be: Boston.
Given the ties the Massachusetts city has to the Irish heritage, it was a natural fit, and all that was left to be determined was an opponent. Well, at least one man wants that fight on that date, as Brimage's fellow TUF 14 competitor Akira Corassani has called McGregor out.
Releasing a video directed towards McGregor, Corassani laid out an explicit challenge for the August 17 event at Boston's TD Garden on Fox Sports 1.
"Conor McGregor, I hereby challenge you to fight me on Aug. 17, 2013, on Fox Sports 1 at TD Garden," Corassani said. "I respect you, I respect your team, and I respect the Republic of Ireland. But it's time to do this."
Penick's Analysis: Corassani scored a big win on that same Fuel card in Sweden, defeating Robbie Peralta by decision for his second straight win. Given McGregor's age, the UFC really could put him in with just about anyone for his next fight and it would make sense, as there's no hurry to rush him up the ladder. Because of that, Corassani would be a fine opponent, so if it's something the UFC is interested in, and that McGregor is interested in, then it just might come together this summer.
