The Ultimate Fighter's 16th season came to a fizzling end on Saturday night, as Team Nelson's Colton Smith controlled Team Carwin's Mike Ricci on the ground for 15 minutes to earn a unanimous decision and take title of TUF winner.
The fight came down to Smith's grappling game. He was the larger, stronger fighter, and he controlled Ricci on the ground throughout the 15-minute fight. However, Ricci easily defended every sloppy submission attempt, leading to a monotonous fight going the distance.
There was some controversy in the second round, as referee Steve Mazzagatti didn't halt the action despite a very clear low blow from Smith, and Ricci could only defend himself incredulously as the fight was allowed to continue. Ultimately, he couldn't defend the takedown, and couldn't do much himself on the ground, and it led to a missed opportunity for him.
