"I definitely have goals to compete at heavyweight and obviously go for the championship. But it's a ways away. Right now I'm cutting weight more efficiently, trying to eat smarter and do things better and the weight cuts are getting easier so, heavyweight might be a ways away… When I move up to heavyweight I definitely won't be trying to hang on to two belts at the same time. I'll be focused, you know, strictly on heavyweight. When I compete at heavyweight I plan on weighing like 240 and I really won't want to get much bigger than that. I think speed and agility would give me an advantage being smaller than those guys."
-UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones talks to fans on a MetroPCS fan chat about an eventual move to the heavyweight division (transcribed by MMAMania.com).
Penick's Analysis: Jones walks around comfortably in the 220 lb. range right now, cutting down to the 205 lb. limit. At 25, he's going to continue bulking up naturally, and getting himself to around 240 lbs. cut is a workable weight that could allow him to compete effectively at heavyweight. It is only a matter of time, but much like Georges St-Pierre has said in the past, moving up in weight is more than likely going to be permanent once it happens. For fighters to be effective in moving up a weight class, bulking up a bit is important, and it makes it harder on the body to try moving back down from there. Jones wants to make the move right when he eventually does make it, so it will be once he's finished his business at 205 lbs.
