Rory MacDonald put on a career-best performance on Saturday night at UFC on Fox 5, beating up B.J. Penn through three rounds to take a dominating decision victory in Seattle.
It was clear from the outset that MacDonald was going to be the fresher, faster, stronger fighter during the bout, as he was beating Penn to the punch, holding off takedown attempts, and doing damage while avoiding most of Penn's offense. Things went to another level in the second round, though, as he hurt Penn badly against the cage with body shots, and began teeing off with combination after combination in an extended beating.
Clearly ahead into the third, MacDonald turned to some showboating antics, doing the Ali shuffle, dropping his hands, and generally acting unconcerned with anything Penn had to offer him. It was the best performance of his young career, and after the fight he made it clear what he wants next: a rematch with Carlos Condit.
MacDonald and Condit fought back in 2010, with Condit scoring a stoppage win with seconds remaining in the third round. That remains MacDonald's only loss to date, and on Saturday he officially called Condit out for a fight in March when the UFC is expected to return to Montreal.
For Penn, this loss dropped him to 1-4-1 over his last six fights, and though he wasn't interviewed after the fight, this may have been his actual final career fight.
