Thiago Silva has tested positive for a banned substance once again, this time for marijuana metabolites at UFC on Fuel 6 in Macau, China.
Silva was busted by UFC officials, who handled testing for the Nov. 10 event with no commission oversight. The organization announced the positive test on Wednesday, and revealed that Silva will serve a six month suspension and will need to go through a rehab program.
"Thiago Silva tested positive for marijuana metabolites following his bout at UFC on FUEL TV in Macau," the UFC said in a statement. "The UFC organization has a strict, consistent policy against the use of any illegal and/or performance-enhancing drugs, stimulants or masking agents. Silva has admitted to taking the banned substance and has agreed to participate in an approved drug-rehabilitation program and serve a six-month suspension retroactive to the November 10 event. He must pass a drug test upon completion of the suspension before receiving clearance to fight again."
His bout with Stanislav Nedkov will be overturned to a no contest.
Penick's Analysis: This is just disappointing, but you can't say it's unexpected. In his last six fights dating back to January of 2009, he has gone 3-3. However, two of his three wins in that stretch have now been overturned due to drug test failures. It'd be honestly surprising if the UFC kept him on the roster after this, because he just doesn't seem to learn. This is just another in a long line of poor decisions from Silva, and his future is very much in jeopardy because of it.
