A fantastic welterweight fight is headed to UFC 156 in February, as the UFC announced on Thursday that Jon Fitch meet Demian Maia on the card on Super Bowl weekend.
Both fighters enter the event off of wins at last month's UFC 153 event in Brazil, and immediately after the event it was a fight that many were clamoring for.
Maia took on Rick Story on the card in his second fight at welterweight, and he pulled off one of his more impressive performances in the UFC. Maia quickly got Story to the ground, got his back, and latched on a modified rear naked choke/neck crank that forced Story to tap. It was the first time that Story had ever been stopped in a fight.
Fitch was just as impressive, but in a different fashion, later in the card. Fitch took on rising prospect Erick Silva in his first fight since a 12-second KO loss to Johny Hendricks, and he put forth an excellent showing by out-working Silva before entirely dominating the final frame.
UFC 156 takes place on Feb. 2, headlined by a Featherweight Championship bout between Jose Aldo and former UFC Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar. The card will also feature a heavyweight bout between Alistair Overeem and Bigfoot Silva.
