A long-talked about lightweight fight between Anthony Pettis and Donald Cerrone may have a date, as MMAJunkie.com reports that it's being targeted for an as-of-yet unannounced event on January 26.
That card doesn't have a set title or location, but it's been rumored to be the first Fox event of 2013, and could be the UFC's second straight January event in Chicago.
The report goes along with comments Pettis made recently, as he said he was going ahead with training, believing he was fighting Cerrone on that date. However, a recent trip to the hospital for cellulitis had Cerrone publicly questioning whether the fight would come together.
Those fears have apparently subsided, and the fight looks like it may finally be coming together in late January.
Penick's Analysis: Having Pettis-Cerrone on Fox is a great idea, especially with the Lightweight Championship being contested on the network next month. Having two Fox events in a row in consecutive months with the top 155 lb. fighters in each sets up the next Lightweight Championship bout in a big way. And have no doubt, the winner of this fight will make for an exciting title challenger, and if Ben Henderson gets past Nate Diaz in December it will be an exciting rematch regardless of who wins between Pettis and Cerrone.
