"It was a great fight. I knew that Maldonado was a tough guy. I was even surprised that he had fallen there in the beginning of the round, but then I was also surprised he endured so much and continued fighting on the ground. But I knew it would be a tough fight, but he lasted this long. He's a guy I like, who I did not want to hurt either. I did not think the judges should have stopped it, it is difficult to say. I saw that he was hurt, a few times I saw the white of his eyes, but at all times he was fighting back, so he was not stopped."
-Glover Teixeira talks to Globo's SporTV about his UFC 153 bout with Fabio Maldonado, expressing his belief that the fight was stopped too early.
Penick's Analysis: I can understand this sentiment if he was simply disappointed he didn't get a finish during the fight, but there was no way the fight was stopped early. Indeed, allowing Maldonado to take even more of a beating in that second round was ridiculous in and of itself, and only came about because he managed to land one punch that slightly wobbled Teixeira. But he had already taken so much damage in that first frame that it was all instinct. That fight had no business continuing as long as it did, and despite Maldonado's toughness in the fight he needed to be saved from himself.
