Earlier this year, UFC President Dana White revealed that he had been diagnosed with Meniere's disease, an affliction of the inner ear affecting hearing and balance. White had experienced symptoms of the disease, including a bout with vertigo on a flight to Brazil, and hoped to get surgery this summer to take care of the issue.
However, his doctor did not want to go the surgery route, instead keeping him on medication that only works for 50% of patients. White has been vehement about his desire to undergo the surgery, but it's a risky procedure that requires intensive rehabilitation. Still, White has wanted to go the surgery route, which would involve cutting a nerve in the inner ear, and White would need to re-learn a lot of things in terms of walking and moving around with that equilibrium issue.
Well, White revealed on Wednesday that the surgery is finally coming, and following Saturday's UFC 153 event in Rio de Janeiro, he'll be heading back to go under the knife. White wrote the following on Twitter:
"Saw the Dr today about my menieres and I'm getn the surgery when I get home from Brazil!!!!! :) #getmyfuknlifeback"
Penick's Analysis: White will likely have to miss the UFC on Fuel 6 event in Macau, even though he thinks he'll have a faster recovery than the normal person. Still, this is the right time to take care of it, because he's got nearly a month between events for the UFC, and if he misses the event in Macau he's got an extra week before the Montreal card and Georges St-Pierre's return. This is still a very risky procedure, and there's no guarantee the surgery will work. But White wants to go forward with it, and his doctor is finally on board.
