If Dana White didn't want people who boo flyweight fights to come back, those fans didn't get the message yet. (Quote intentionally taken out of context.) John Dodson and Jussier "Formiga" da Silva spent the first round feeling each other out with very little offense happening as they were greeted with thunderous boos from those in attendance.
The second round was largely more of the same with the interruption of Dodson landing a nice left hand that put da Silva on the floor. The fight made its way back to the feet, where the action stalled again as da Silva tried to stay away from Dodson.
Dodson would not be denied, however, as he connected in the final minute of the second round with a left hand that looked like it grazed da Silva, but it had been preceded by two nasty body shots, and da Silva had had enough. He went down and barely covered up as Dodson finished the fight.
With that win, Dodson becomes the number one contender to Demetrious Johnson's Flyweight Title. Da Silva's UFC debut didn't go his way, but in a flyweight division where the promotion currently employs fewer than 20 fighters, it would be hard to count out a guy with the submission skills of "Formiga" for long.
