Over the last several years, discussion of a super-fight between UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva and UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St-Pierre has permeated throughout the MMA community. The timing has never worked out to actually put the fight together, but depending on how things play out this fall, that's a fight that the UFC would be very interested in putting together early next year.

That's the word from UFC owner and CEO Lorenzo Fertitta, who commented on the prospects of GSP-Silva to the Los Angeles Times. Fertitta was responding to comments made by Silva's management recently, in which they've placed a fight with St-Pierre above all other options in the UFC.

"We are very open to the idea of Anderson-GSP," Fertitta said. "If GSP beats [Carlos] Condit, it's a fight we would like to make."

St-Pierre's return bout against Condit is expected to come at UFC 154 in Montreal this November, so a matchup with Silva may depend on not only that, but whether Silva's convinced to take a fight in the interim himself.

If Silva fits in a fight this fall, a bout with GSP would make sense for each of them as their first bouts in 2013. If Silva doesn't fight in between, it would mean a significant layoff to wait for St-Pierre.

Penick's Analysis: I still think Chris Weidman will be getting a fight with Silva, perhaps by December, and then a Silva-GSP fight could work as a massive superfight in 2013. Still, with how much has been said about this fight over the years, it's one of those situations where it won't be a reality until they're standing across from one another. If it happens, it could be an incredible spectacle, but no one will hold their breath for it.
