"Chael Sonnen, motivated, in great shape, injury free, couldn't have been better, and wanted that title so bad. Goes in that first round, look at the way that happened, and this is what Chael Sonnen said to me after the fight, he didn't say it at the press conference, but he said it to me.
He said 'I have so much respect for this guy, Dana. I've been competing in combat sports since I was 7-years old and in that first round when I was on top of him and I was hitting him with those big elbows, I felt him break. I broke him in that first round. He came back in the second round, and destroyed me.' He said 'I've never seen anybody do that, ever.'"
-UFC President Dana White spoke with Jim Rome on the Jim Rome Show on Tuesday, and revealed what Chael Sonnen told him about Anderson Silva after their bout on Saturday at UFC 148 (transcribed by MMAWeekly.com).
Penick's Analysis: This goes hand in hand with Sonnen's multiple personas. His over the top trash talking hype-machine side really can be a disservice to the man himself, as he's at his best when he's being honest and doing honest evaluations of himself and his fights. I don't know that he "broke" Silva in the first round, but he certainly did some damage on top while taking the opening frame, and he made it seem like it could certainly be several more rounds of that before Silva turned things around in the second. This sentiment from Sonnen would have been great to see at the post-fight press conference, though I'm sure he wasn't expecting it to necessarily get out from White. Then again, maybe he was, as White's not one to leave all his conversations private.
