Saturday's main event between Carlos Condit and Nick Diaz has been billed as "the fight neither of them wanted," but with the Interim Welterweight Championship on the line, it's a fight that means more to them both than any they've had previously.
For Condit, it's a fight he's often thought about, and though he wants the Welterweight Championship fight with Georges St-Pierre, he's absolutely looking forward to Saturday's main event.
"I've been watching him for a long time," Condit said this week in an interview with MMAWeekly.com. "I like his style, I like how exciting he is, and I myself like to put on good shows and good fights as well, so I always thought a fight against him would be pretty spectacular."
Many favor Diaz in Saturday's fight after what he was able to do against B.J. Penn in October. However, Condit has confidence in himself, and he believes a win in this fight will get him the recognition he feels he deserves as one of the best in the world.
"I think styles make fights and I don't think he's unbeatable,” Condit said. "I've walked a long road. I've been fighting professionally for like nine years now, fought some of the best guys in the world, and if I beat Nick, I definitely deserve that belt because he is one of the best."
Penick's Analysis: Most expect this fight to be on the spectacular side, as the styles of both fighters - at least on paper - makes for one of the more intriguing matchups the UFC could put together. Both are immensely dynamic in their striking games, with unique approaches to the stand up game that have provided highlight after highlight throughout their careers. But both are also extremely adept on the ground as well, having each pulled off numerous submission wins in their time in the game as well. This is simply two really high level mixed martial artists competing for a title, and it should be fantastic.
