Anderson Silva is continuing to recover from injuries suffered in and after his fight with Yushin Okami in August, but it has generally been expected that he'll be returning in June to meet the winner of the Chael Sonnen-Mark Munoz fight from UFC on Fox 2. However, the UFC Middleweight Champion has cast some doubt on that return in recent comments made to Brazil's SporTV.
"I'm not sure when I'll be back," Silva said (translated by Tom Mendes at BloodyElbow.com). "I got an injury in my shoulder and another injury that just happened in my lumbar, so I'm treating myself."
This comes after an update from one of his doctors stating he was near 100% just this month, and until a fight is officially announced, it will be tough to know just exactly where the Champ stands on this front.
Penick's Analysis: If he has suffered another injury on top of what he was recovering from, that puts a definite damper on the UFC's plans for the year. They're already without Georges St-Pierre for the year, Brock Lesnar just retired, and a fight between Silva and Sonnen in Brazil in June would be expected to be one of the biggest fights the UFC can put on this year. If Silva's not ready to return by then, that won't be a good thing.
