After taking several knees and punches to the body from Alistair Overeem on Friday night, Brock Lesnar crumpled to the ground in a delayed reaction after a final kick to the gut at UFC 141. Buckled over in pain, he could only cover up to avoid strikes to his head, but that left his body wide open.
Overeem took advantage of the opening, and landed another vicious shot to the body that led to the fight stoppage. Lesnar subsequently announced his retirement in the cage, and walked out.
He didn't appear at the post-fight press conference, but UFC President Dana White did pass on at least one nugget about Lesnar's post-fight reaction, saying the former Champ felt he had broken a rib in the fight.
"A lot of people don't realize what that feels like," White stated. "He said 'I think my rib's broken, I don't know what a broken rib feels like, but if it hurts worse than this I don't want to feel it."
It was clear that the body work from Overeem was the story of the fight, and if Lesnar did break a rib we'll find out from the post-fight medicals, but it was definitely a brutal send-off for the UFC's biggest pay-per-view draw.
Penick's Analysis: It was a brutal assault from Overeem that everyone knew he was capable of delivering, but Lesnar honestly appeared to be ready to bring the fight to the ground in the lead up to the event, and that swayed the opinions of many. Overeem was extremely smart with his gameplan, and utilized his skill set to perfection while keeping Lesnar incapable of doing anything to him. Brutalizing body shots are becoming more common, and I think we'll continue to see fighters working the body of their opponents going forward.
