The UFC's new App on the Xbox 360 launched today, and fans who hopped on right away this morning were treated with a very nice surprise: UFC 141 "Lesnar vs. Overeem" for free. Next weekend's event was made available for free through the new streaming service for the first 25,000 fans to order it, though fans who still want to check out the new application can still purchase the pay-per-view event and watch it live next week.
Right now, the app is a bit bare bones. There are select videos available for fans to watch before the event - including a few interviews, as well as some UFC 140 content - and they can still check out some cool stats and bios of the main card fighters and make picks on the fights, but it's not quite a fully-fleshed out application just yet.
I spoke with a Microsoft spokesperson this afternoon to find out about plans for a few expanded features, including whether or not preliminary card fights and FX/Fuel TV live events would be available through the app, and whether or not past events would be available through the service. Here are the answers I received:
"At launch, UFC on Xbox LIVE will focus on delivering major live and Pay-Per-View fights," the spokesperson said. "While we’re continuing to explore ways to expand the service, UFC on Xbox LIVE does not currently support FX and Fuel TV television events or preliminary fights."
"Although the catalog of past fights will not be available at launch through UFC on Xbox LIVE, the features and content supported by UFC on Xbox LIVE will continue to grow, bringing you the best fights from the best fighters on Xbox 360 and Xbox LIVE."
So while it's not everything fans could hope for just yet, it's a good start, and definitely worth checking out for this first pay-per-view card under the service next Friday.
