...OH, ONE MORE THING - PLEASE BOOKMARK US & VISIT DAILY!
By: Alex Williams, MMATorch Contributor According to Dave Meltzer in the July 29 Wrestling Observer Newsletter (subscription required), UFC newcomer and college wrestling star Cain Velasquez recently sprinted through Brandon Vera, Mike Kyle and Paul Buentello in a gym training session. Velasquez, Vera and Buentello were all preparing for bouts on July 19, the former two for UFC Fight Night and the latter for Affliction: Banned. Velasquez, who has adopted Brock Lesnar's moniker "The Next Big Thing," is reported by Meltzer to have "destroyed" Vera for two rounds, then Kyle, then Buentello. What is more, at the end of the six rounds, Meltzer says Velasquez "wasn't even the slightest bit tired."
While it's an impressive story, and it's certainly better for Velasquez to be dominating high quality opposition in training than to not be, keep in mind that success in the gym does not always translate to success in live fights. Previously, competitors like Vitor Belfort, Phil Baroni and Matt Hamill have been said to have looked like killers in training before putting on mediocre (or worse!) performances in the bouts for which they were preparing.
