UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St-Pierre revealed on Wednesday night that it was actually two injuries suffered this week that took him out of next week's UFC 137 event.
In an interview with Sportsnet.ca, the Champ said that he suffered an initial injury on Saturday, which he described as a moderate ligament strain. He felt that initial injury might have led to damage of his MCL.
To add to that, he injured his hamstring on Tuesday afternoon while compensating for Saturday's injury. He had wanted to fight through the initial injury, but the addition of Tuesday's damage forced him out.
"I'm not going to lie – I cried yesterday," St-Pierre said. "I had a ton of pressure falling off my shoulders, because for the last few days I was in the mindset that I was nervous for the fight. I was excited for the fight but I was also nervous to know if I was going to be able to fight.
"Now all the pressure is off, I feel much better. I'm going to do some rehab, maybe take a vacation because I went through a lot. It's not only the fight, it's all the training camp, I went through a lot of stuff. I need to reset the whole thing again and I'll be ready for the next one."
St-Pierre said he wants to make sure he recovers completely and doesn't return too fast, and expects to be back no earlier than the end of January or early February.
Penick's Analysis: Overcompensating to fight through an injury often leads to another injury in sports. It happens in just about every sport if the athlete gets too overzealous with trying to tough it out through a minor injury. Of course it is really unfortunate that this led to St-Pierre having to pull out of this fight, but at the same time he may not have been entirely effective in his main event bout with Carlos Condit with the knee injury. By taking the time to heal up, he'll hopefully be able to go closer to 100% by the time he does get back into the cage.
