Almost four years after being submitted by Forrest Griffin in his UFC debut, Mauricio "Shogun" Rua avenged that loss in brutal fashion on Saturday night at UFC 134, knocking out the former champ in under two minutes in Brazil.
In what was likely a very similar fight to the one fans envisioned happening back in 2007, Rua's aggressive striking had Griffin flustered early, and with Griffin seemingly uninterested in engaging, Rua was able to bring the fight to him.
"Shogun" cracked Griffin with a right a minute and a half into the round, and Griffin attempted to grab a leg to recover. Unfortunately for him, Rua pounced, and landed a brutal series of hammerfist strikes that bounced his head off the canvas and put him out cold.
The loss was Griffin's first since his knockout loss to Anderson Silva in August of 2009, and the win gave Rua a rebound after losing his UFC Light Heavyweight Title to Jon Jones in March. Rua now finds himself likely one fight away from getting an opportunity to regain that title.
For Griffin, who just didn't look like he wanted to be in the cage on Saturday, the loss takes him out of the title picture, and he'll need to try to rebound in a big way in his next fight.
