Not one, but two semi-final fights took place on last night’s episode. First we see Tecia Torres about to face off against Carla Esparza. Some history: when Torres defeated Herrig previously at Invicta FC 7, then-champ Carla called her out. It’s always pretty weird to see a champ call out a newer, younger fighter. Since Esparza’s been talking so much shit about Torres, even slinging steroid accusations, I thought maybe Torres would pull the upset.
Esparza did end up getting the win, but seemed a bit flustered, as it was hard for her to set up her shots with punches, and Torres’ takedown defense was on point. Esparza did manage to get a lot of takedowns, though, and spent a good portion of both rounds on Tecia’s back or in top position, so she won the match by majority decision.
Next we see Joanne Calderwood facing Rose Namajunas after a bit of buildup, including Namajunas getting very frustrated in training when being asked to set up a jab that isn’t there… we also get a shot of Angela Magana wearing a sombrero (I know, random!).
Calderwood probably has the best kickboxing in women’s MMA, but Rose has a dynamic, aggressive style as well. Namajunas comes out with a head kick but gets taken down, yet she is active off her back before standing to get a takedown of her own. Calderwood stands quickly and lands a judo throw after the two trade punches. Namajunas is active off her back, attempting armbars and kimuras, and finishing the round on top. 10-9 Rose.
Calderwood comes out swinging in the next round, or rather kicking, as she landed a push kick before taking a stiff left. Calderwood worked on staying in range, landing big knees, and working against the cage. She landed a takedown, too, until Namajunas ended the bout quickly with a kimura.
Next episode is the semis: Esparza vs. Jessica Penne and Namajunas vs. Randa Markos. Who ya got?
