...OH, ONE MORE THING - PLEASE BOOKMARK US & VISIT DAILY!
This is the Writers' Roundtable here at MMATorch.com. In this feature our own Matt Pelkey will be providing our questions each week, and then we'll provide the answers from members of our staff here at MMATorch.com. This week, we've got Torch Contributors Alex Williams and Frank Hyden, along with Torch Columnist Matt Pelkey and Torch Editor Jamie Penick. We've got three questions this week, and today we present the first question:
What was the better event, UFC 91 or UFC 92?
Alex Williams, MMATorch Contributor:
UFC 92. There were simply more fights with immediate title implications--not just the three main events, but the Okami/Lister fight, as well. As such, it is rare that we have so many potential upper-card matches to discuss stemming from a single event. What is more, with the exception of Okami/Lister, the other three major bouts were entertaining.
Frank Hyden, MMATorch Contributor:
If I try to remain objective I would say that UFC 92 was the better event. There were many more surprising moments on UFC 92, ranging from Mir stopping Nogueira to Rashad dropping Forrest. There was even the brutal KO of Wanderlei by Rampage. Cheick Kongo and Yushin Okami continued to climb the ladder in their respective divisions as well.
UFC 91 featured some great moments like Kenny Florian taking apart Joe Stevenson and Brock Lesnar dominating Randy Couture but we all pretty much expected that to happen. Oftentimes the unknown makes for more excitement and UFC 92 had that in spades. Both shows were great, but I give the nod to UFC 92.
Matt Pelkey, MMATorch Columnist:
I know UFC 92 delivered on the hype, and its still fresh in our minds, but I'll take 91. 92 had three HUGE fights, and all lived up to or exceeded expectations in their own way. My problem is, we basically saw the same thing over and over in every fight at UFC 92. UFC 91 only had one big fight, but it was bigger than any of the three from 92. At 92, all eight televised fights ended in some variety of a (T)KO. 91 had knockouts, submissions, comebacks, decisions... You name it, UFC 91 provided it for you. Either way, what a great two shows to close out a great year of MMA. Can't wait for 2009!
Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief:
UFC 92 was a great card with three great main events, but UFC 91 provided something of everything for every MMA fan. With the massive main event fight between Lesnar and Couture that did not disappoint, UFC 91 had the clear cut star fight that everyone wanted to see. That fight itself was the reason that show did over a million buys on pay-per-view. On top of that, all nine fights were shown on pay-per-view, with outcomes ranging from massive highlight reel knockouts to some very slick submissions to an all out battle that went to the judges. This was just the best top to bottom show of the year that should have sent everyone home happy. It was simply a great event, and UFC 92 followed with a great one itself. It was a great finish to a great 2008 for the UFC.
