We asked MMATorch readers on Tuesday the following question: Why do you think Dan Henderson's TRT use is not scrutinized as heavily as other fighters who have been outed as TRT users? Here is the first batch of responses.
Marcques B. (via Facebook): Because of double standards. Cheal Sonnen had no use exception for TRT when he first fought A. Silva and all people say is he gave the Spider his toughest fight. Dan was on TRT for his epic Shogun fight and all everyone can say is classic fight. Vitor does it and and wins and its a big issue. I don't think anyone should get exceptions. If you're too old to produce normal testosterone levels or abused steroids and can't get normal testosterone levels then you shouldn't be fighting. If TRT is going to be a hot topic then everyone using it should be looked at not just a small group of fighters.
Matt H. (via email): In a nutshell, because he was on it before anyone else. Plus, we've never seen any massive changes in his physique or abilities. If you'll notice, the less a person on TRT wins the less their TRT matters (Mir, Sonnen) as opposed to those that dominate on it (Belfort). We know Hendo isn't superhuman, so it's easy to call his TRT legitimate.
MMATorch Forum User conrad1886: Remember when Vitor was busted for PEDs or whatever? And I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that extensive roid use will make your natural testosterone level become abnormally low? My point, Dan's a stand up guy and has never been in trouble that i can remember. I don't like TRT but who the f*** am I? I think if they made TRT illegal tomorrow that we'd see Vitor dramatically decline, whereas I think Hendo would be pretty much the same. Just an opinion.
John M. (via Facebook): Age. He's never been busted for PEDs. He's a legend of the sport. And he doesn't look or seemingly have superhuman like capabilities, unlike TRTor.
Joey F. (via email): The reason behind not calling out Dan Henderson is because he's not knocking out top 10 fighters and making them look like amateurs. Dan's last two fights were decisions in which either fighter could have won on certain judges scorecards. It's easy to pick in Vitor Belfort because of his past and his defensiveness towards TRT, but last I checked Vitor has been fighting about the same way for years, that's the way he fights. Old age doesn't change the way fighters fight, getting concussions or nagging sports injuries does, and Vitor hasn't been getting any.
