WORLD SERIES OF FIGHTING 8
JANUARY 18, 2014
LIVE FROM HOLLYWOOD, FLORIDA

-Kenny Rice and Bas Rutten open up the broadcast with a run down of what's on tap for the five-fight main card here tonight. They throw backstage for a quick interview with Anthony Johnson. We get a graphic with a countdown to the first fight, which will come up after the break.

FIGHT ONE: LUIS PALOMINO VS. JORGE PATINO (LIGHTWEIGHT)

ROUND ONE: Palomino came out throwing kicks early. Patino fired some back. Palomino scored a solid counter-left. He rushed in with a couple strikes and got taken down against the cage. Palomino closed his guard and held on tight. Patino tried to break loose, but Palomino held on. Patino finally got a little room and landed a few strikes, but then they were stood up. Palomino threw a spinning kick but it missed. Palomino connected on a good left. He landed several big strikes on Patino. Palomino unloaded a huge flurry of strikes and Patino was hurt, but he recovered enough to get a takedown. He tried to lock on a guillotine against the cage but the bell sounded.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Palomino. Despite the takedowns and the sub attempt at the end, the damage done by Palomino on the feet should give him the round.

ROUND TWO: Palomino came out the aggressor, landing a few strikes in the opening round. Patino tried to move in, but Palomino connected. He landed a big two punch combo and Patino was a bit wobbly. Palomino picked his spots, though, and didn't overcommit. They each missed a few strikes. Palomino threw a spinning kick but Patino backed up. Palomino landed another rocking left. He connected with several more and Patino fired back on instinct. He stayed on his feet though and recovered. Palomino again landed the left. Palomino connected on another left, then got in with the spinning kick. He rocked him and landed a flying knee and a few more that knocked him down. He landed several big strikes on the ground and Patino went out cold.

WINNER: Palomino via KO at 4:20 of the second round

STAR RATING: (**) One-sided beating. Patino took some big strikes throughout the fight, and was simply able to survive until he wasn't. Nice finishing instincts from Palomino to keep up the attack yet not over-exert himself in the wrong spots.

-Nick Newell is in the cage, receiving a $5,500 bonus check for his performance at WSOF 7 in their "Rattle the Cage" performance of the night fan vote.

FIGHT TWO: TYSON NAM VS. CODY BOLLINGER (BANTAMWEIGHT)

ROUND ONE: Bollinger landed an early body kick, then a left hook shortly thereafter. Nam got inside with a leg kick. Bit of a feeling out process early and they traded strikes. Bollinger got a nice Muay Thai clinch and unleashed four knees to the head before Nam could break loose. Nice sequence. Bollinger continued to pour out more strikes, connecting on several for every strike thrown by Nam. Bollinger landed a nice flying knee to the body. He got through with a straight right after eating a kick. Nam landed a solid body punch. Bollinger unloaded a big uppercut but it was partially blocked. Nam got in a solid kick again. Nam stepped over with a nice overhand right. They traded punches in the center. Bollinger landed a nice right. Nam went back inside with the kick. Nam caught Bollinger behind the head and knocked him down. He tried to capitalize, but Bollinger quickly recovered and got to his feet. They traded strikes. Bollinger landed a nice right. The bell sounded.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Nam. Bollinger didn't have enough of an offensive edge to make up for the knockdown. Tough round to score, though, won't argue hard with a Bollinger round.

ROUND TWO: The two traded kicks early, then exchanged punches in a nice sequence as well. Bollinger took a body kick but landed a hard left that briefly sent Nam down. Nam popped up though. Bollinger tossed in a bit of a cartwheel kick attempt. Bollinger landed a right, but Nam countered with two good leg kicks. Bollinger snuck in a solid left hook. Nam knocked him off balance with a kick, but he quickly got out and to his feet. Bollinger went for a spinning kick that missed. Bollinger went high with a kick that Nam got mostly out of the way from. Nam landed a nice counter-right. Bollinger went high with a kick that was blocked but he fired a right hand behind it. Nam stuffed a takedown. Nam landed a counter to the body. Bollinger slipped on a high kick but was let back up. Nam got in a body kick as the round ended.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Nam. Another close round that could go to Bollinger, but I think Nam edged it with slightly more effective offense there.

ROUND THREE: Bollinger tried to duck in for a takedown briefly and tripped Nam up, but he popped back to his feet. Bollinger threw out a lot, but Nam blocked or avoided most of what he threw early on. Nam landed two solid counter-strikes as he side stepped a punch. Nam landed an inside leg kick. Both were missing a lot of strikes. Bollinger threw a spinning kick to the body. Bollinger kept wiping his feet on the mat, and it was bothering him. Nam landed a couple more inside kicks. Bollinger landed a combination. Nam sidestepped a head kick attempt. Rice and Rutten criticized the lack of urgency, which was fair. The exchanges were closer to a tentative sparring session. Nam went inside. He landed a counter as Bollinger missed a punch. The crowd booed the two of them. Bollinger threw some strikes out that missed. He landed a hard combo and got pushed back with a body punch. The crowd booed as more strikes missed. Bollinger tried to pick it up, but a lot of his thrown strikes were blocked. Bollinger landed a two-punch combo. He went high with a knee with a punch behind. They traded right hand strikes. Bollinger got in a couple of body kicks late.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Nam. I guess. Honestly, there was so little offense that actually connected throughout this fight that it's one bout I can see scores of 30-27 for either fighter being legitimately acceptable, but I think Nam's got the slight edge in each round.

WINNER: Bollinger via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

STAR RATING: (*) Not a good fight, it just never kicked out of that tentative, opening gear. The one "knock down" in the fight came with a strike to the back of the head, and Bollinger recovered quickly. I can see him getting the first and third, especially, with an argument for the second, but it's not one of those where Nam can have too much complaint because he just didn't do much himself.

-They throw to a backstage interview with Alida Gray ahead of her title fight with Jessica Aguilar, which is up next.

FIGHT THREE: JESSICA AGUILAR VS. ALIDA GRAY (WOMEN'S STRAWWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP)

ROUND ONE: Aguilar rushed out to the center and quickly closed the distance. She shot in and tried to secure the takedown, ultimately taking Gray's back and dragging her down. Gray worked right back to her feet though and got turned around. She landed some punches as Aguilar stayed on the takedown attempt. Gray landed several elbows, but Aguilar dragged her back down. Aguilar landed some body strikes as Gray tried to neutralize her from half guard. Aguilar tried to stay busy with strikes. She got high in the half guard and landed several elbows before working to an arm triangle. She successfully passed to side control and forced the tap.

WINNER: Aguilar via submission (arm triangle choke) at 2:45 of the first round

STAR RATING: (**) Nice performance from Aguilar against a fighter who just wasn't ready for that level of opponent.

-Danny Trejo was in attendance to support Aguilar tonight, and stole the attention into her post-fight interview, helping get her belt on and taking pictures with her in an awkward, "only on live tv" moment.

FIGHT FOUR: ANTHONY JOHNSON VS. MIKE KYLE (LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT)

ROUND ONE: Both fighter feinted out some strikes to start. Johnson landed an early kick. They both missed on some wound up strikes. Johnson went to the lead leg with kicks. He landed a nice left. Kyle caught a low kick and took his back standing. He landed a couple of knees to the thigh. After a few more, he separated and landed a strike. Johnson moved back across the cage to him and landed a strike. Johnson landed a huge left with a right hook counter that knocked Kyle flat on his face, and he landed one more completely unnecessary strike as the ref was stepping in. Kyle was out face first on the mat.

WINNER: Johnson via KO at 2:03 of the first round

STAR RATING: (**) Johnson picked up a decisive and brutal finish in his final contracted WSOF fight, and I wouldn't be surprised if the UFC brings him back after that. Outside of that, the final punch just really didn't need to be thrown. Kyle was out cold, wasn't moving, and the ref was trying to get there. A walk off is much more impressive in that spot when the opponent is clearly out cold.

MAIN EVENT FIGHT FIVE: JUSTIN GAETHJE VS. RICH PATISHNOCK (LIGHTWEIGHT)

ROUND ONE: Gaethje tossed in a flying knee right off the bat. Patishnock landed several big strikes but Gaethje came right back and landed a knee then dropped him with a huge right hook. Patishnock stayed in it but was clearly hurt. Gaethje fired several more. He landed a big uppercut and another big strike. He was firing a huge flurry of uppercuts. He started teeing off on Patishnock and the ref stopped it standing.

WINNER: Gaethje via TKO at 1:09 of the first round

STAR RATING: (**+) Fun little brawl. Gaethje allowed himself to get cracked by a couple of strikes, but he just unleashed a furious barrage of strikes and Patishnock was hurt badly. He tried to complain afterward, but he wasn't really defending himself much, and it was only a matter of time at that point.
