Tragedy struck in Japan on Friday, as an 8.9-magnitude earthquake struck the country, and the tsunamis that ensued have done massive damage to the much of the country. According to CNN's report on the earthquake, though the epicenter was 231 miles from the nation's capital, Tokyo, residents of that city felt the tremors, and the the natural disaster has hit the country hard.

The tragic happenings have had an effect on the MMA scene in the country for this weekend, at least, as three separate events were scheduled to take place. Jewels, Shooto and Pancrase have all canceled events due to Friday's earthquake. Even though they were all scheduled in cities away from most of the damage, there was enough done in their locations to warrant cancelation.

For those that would like to help in assisting those in need in Japan, check out the information below from GlobalGiving.org for information on how to donate. Provided is also some more information on what your donations would go towards, and we wish the best for all affected by Friday's tragedy.

Summary
The north coast of Japan was hit by a horrible tsunami after an 8.9 magnitude earthquake that occurred 80 miles offshore.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Tsunami waves caused major destruction in northern Japan. Trains have been shut down across the country and current estimates are 1000+ people have died. We are working with International Medical Corps, Save the Children, and other organizations on the ground to provide support. Our partners on the ground are working hard to provide immediate relief. We will post more details of the specific use of funds as soon as possible. All donors will get email updates on how their funds have been used.

How will this project solve this problem?
This project will disburse funds to organizations providing relief and emergency services to victims of the earthquake and tsunami. GlobalGiving is working with International Medical Corps, Save the Children, and other organizations on the ground.

Potential Long Term Impact
Major disasters always require a huge amount of international support to provide relief and long term recovery efforts. In the case of Japan, these initial funds will help survivors and victims get necessary services.

Project Message
"This tremor was unlike any I’ve experienced previously, and I’ve lived here for eight years. It was a sustained rolling that made it impossible to stand, almost like vertigo."
- Matt Alt, quoted in New York Times, an American writer and translator living in Japan
