Texas based Shark Fights will be airing their stacked September event on pay-per-view, as the organization made the announcement on Thursday.
The card, headlined by a non-title light heavyweight bout between Keith Jardine and Trevor Prangley, also features Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou, Houston Alexander, Paul Daley, Drew McFedries and Joey Villasenor.
The event takes place from the Amarillo Civic Center in Texas on September 11.
"We are tremendously proud to do our first pay-per-view event with iN DEMAND," Shark Fights CEO Brent Medley stated. "It is a significant milestone for our company. Now fans who can't make it to the event can watch the fights live in the comfort of their homes. We are very excited that we are able to offer the fans a card stacked with such well-matched, high-profile fighters for only $29.99."
But while the move to pay-per-view can be seen as an attempt to move to the next level as a company, Medley doesn't categorize it that way at all.
"One of the great things is that I've got great, great investors who are committed. They're big fight fans themselves," Medley said. "So I went to them, and we got separate money for this show. I said I want it (the event costs, including fighters salaries) paid for before the event.
"I'm a fight fan then a promoter... Are we trying to play with the big boys? Is this event going to leverage our company? The answer is no. The event is separate from our day-to-day profile."
Penick's Analysis: This event is definitely one of the better cards you're going to find that's not put on by one of the major organizations in the U.S., but when Strikeforce runs on Showtime, and other events run on HDNet for free, pricing this at $29.99 is a bit spendy. They'll get some interest, and with no other television people that are interested in seeing this will tune in, but I'd have to imagine they would have gotten much more with a $19.99 price point for the card.
